Friends 90s Fashion

Hi all,

What springs to mind when I say Rachel and Ross, or smelly cat, or Central Perk?  That's right FRIENDS - a TV programme that dominated the 90s and early 00s.  Even now in 2014 if I'm feeling a bit down and feel like I need a laugh I'll put on an episode.  Almost instantly you find yourself laughing at something you have how many times before but that's what is so good about the programme.  The three main actresses Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston), Monica Geller (Courtney Cox) and Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow) were style icons for a generation of young women, so I'm going to reminisce some of their most classic looks and see if any of them are on trend in 2014.

Rachel was the girl next door:  every girl wanted to be like her and every guy wanted to be with her.  She was from a wealthy family, she began working in the coffee shop and later found her niche working at Ralph Lauren - so always looked fashionable.

Rachel loved anything denim and was constantly seen wearing denim dungarees.  Denim has consistently remained in fashion and is a staple in anyone's wardrobe.  Rachel also loved a turtleneck - it didn't matter how high or thick!  And she sparked this trend off amongst viewers - I would like to think these were not on trend now but in relation to the current trend of wrapping up some trend setters have been spotted in them.  Rachel also had quite a classic style and often wore unfitted vintage sweaters and paired them up with a more feminine skirt or dress.  Just last season this was  in fashion with slogan t-shirts and jumpers taking over runways and stores!

Monica was the clean freak, mother of the group whose style was classic and elegant.  She was organised and wore conservative yet tight fitting clothing.

Monica is said to have started the cardigan craze, and she wore them with everything - whether it was jeans and a t-shirt or a dress.  Unfortunately due to our weather we still have to wear cardigans quite a lot but they are not the most flattering.  Monica loved a thin, long scarf any time of year - which lets be honest have never really been in fashion.  But she was very on trend in the 90s and even today with high-waisted jeans that she wore on a regular basis.

Finally, Phoebe the free-spirited, quirky friend who was considered a bit of a hippy.  She wore plenty of colour and loved mismatching prints - she was very trendy in the early 90s.

Phoebe was the dress girl she was always colourfully dressed.  She wore a lot of boho, flowy maxis and peasant blouses.  Her granny style dresses were often teamed up with boots.  Phoebe was not the most fashionable character as the series progressed.  When you watch the episodes back you do look at some of the clothing she wears and think what was she wearing??!!!  However she always accessorised with chunky, statement jewellery which has continued to be fashionable in the present day.

Finally, I couldn't do a post on Friends without talking about those famous hairstyles.  When Jennifer Aniston changed her hair for the second series it became all the rage with women worldwide and was known as "The Rachel".  It was basically a sleek bob.  Phoebes classic half-up do was often copied, and Monica's hair became just as popular once she ditched the fringe!

Readers were you ever influenced by the Friends women?  Did you attempt "The Rachel"?

lots of love the bighearted brunette
